Influential personal finance writer Mr. Money Mustache proposes doing / getting the good things we often wait to buy “later” with money “that will come after X happens …” by optimizing around those good things now and getting out of the consuming / spending cycle and into community. A growing trend that joins with others reshaping finance, business, cities and society. http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2015/08/19/urban-tribe/

Thinking about these things is also important for someone thinking of creating a start-up. The demands of certain types of start-ups (e.g., venture-funded start-ups where the expectation is "infinite" high growth) will take one away from a lot of the good things in life described in the above article. So it's very important to ask -- why am I doing this? what are my (very personal) real goals? will the typical start-up path will serve those goals or will another path will serve those goals better? am I doing this for someone else, to prove a point, because others are, because I can or because it truly serves my goals? I didn't ask these questions in full and true way myself. I know I lot of people that didn't or don't. It was a mistake for me. I learned from it. But, ideally, I would have thought more about this upfront and been honest with myself. Fortunately for me, I didn't get what I thought I wanted with my start-up attempts. And, I can try again and try work in way that serves what I think are my real goals.
